DO FOG MACHINES BREAK DOWN?
Yes, they are machines and like any
machine it will fail at some point. Your goal should be to maintain your fog machine to
extend the mean time between failures. The first thing is to only use fog fluid
that the manufacturer recommends. Next you should always clean the fog machine according
to the manufacturers instructions.On
of the main causes of burned out pump-motors is running the fog machine dry (without fog
fluid). While it's primary function is to produce the fog, the fog fluid also acts as a
coolant and lubricant for the pump and motor. If the fog machine becomes clogged,
particularly after not being used for a long time, Visual Effects makes "Un-clog
it" for their machines, this solution is specifically made to un-clog fog
machine components. It works great in all Visual Effects machines and we always keep at
bottle on hand for emergencies. Before using Un-clog It in a fog machine other than one
made by Visual Effects, contact your fog machine manufacturer and ask them.
If a part such as the pump does break you
should contact the manufacturer, but on inexpensive machines by the time you pay for
shipping, repair service, and part(s) it could cost you as much or more than buying a new
machine.
CAN I BUILD A FOG MACHINE?
We have seen plans for building fog machines on the Net, but we highly
recommend against it. Doing so could be very dangerous. First, if the fog fluid is heated
above a certain temperature it could produce toxic fumes. Second, there is always the
chance of electrical dangers. Remember, since fog machine manufacturers are selling to the
public, they try to design the machines as safe as possible. The risks of attempting to
build a home-made fog machine simply do not out-weigh the price of a commercially designed
and manufactured fog machine.
CAN I MAKE MY OWN FOG FLUID?
We highly recommend against trying to make your
own fog fluid. Manufacturers design the chemical content of the fog producing fluid around
the specific fog machine they manufacturer.
Water/Glycol based fog machine fluids are usually a mixture of
99.9% pure, pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, and distilled
water. I have also heard of glycerin and distilled water being used in home-made fog
machines (very dangerous), but again we recommend against this.
There are many variables to be considered including the temperature range of the fog
machine's heating element and the correct proportions of these chemicals. If not created
within the proper range for a specific fog machine, it is possible that the fog fluid
could oxidize and produce toxic fumes, including formaldehyde, which is a definite health
hazard.
Also, you could damage components in the fog machine, such as the heat exchanger, pump and
exit nozzle. Plus, you will most likely void the warranty on the fog machine(s). I know I
want the fog produced to be as safe and hazard free as possible for my family and guests.
To me one of the most important things is that the company manufactured the machines using
scientific research and engineering to produce a machine that is safe as possible.
I don't believe that any
home-made fog machine or fluid will be as safe, clean and efficient as a commercial
version. It's simple not worth saving a few bucks to take a chance. The risks simply do
not out-weigh the price of a commercially designed and manufactured fog machine.
