Fog Machines WHAT IS A CUBIC FOOT OF FOG?
Fog MachineWhat this means is that the "manufacturer" of the fog machine has rated their fog machine will produce "X" amount of cubic feet of fog per minute. But just because one fog machine claims to produce 5000 cubic per minute doesn't mean that a different machine that claims only 1000 cubic per minute doesn't actually produce more useable fog. Sound confusing? The problem is that there are no industry standards on what exactly a cubic foot of generated fog is, such as what density is the fog in that cubic foot? The numbers shown in manufacturer descriptions are only useful as a guideline. Your best bet is to communicate with someone that already owns the fog machine you are considering and ask them for an opinion.

HOW MUCH FLUID DO FOG MACHINES USE?
Fog FluidThis depends on the type of fog machine, the volume of fog you set it to produce, and the amount of time it is producing fog. Generally, the smaller machines will use almost a quart of fog fluid every two to three hours if run almost continuously. Basically, the larger the machine the more fluid it will use. Check the fluid tank periodically to make sure it always has fluid. If a fog machine operated without fluid it could be damaged.

Tip: Use a funnel to replenish the fog fluid

HOW LONG CAN I STORE FOG FLUID?
Generally speaking, if you have left over fog fluid after Halloween you can store it for use next year. Pour the left over fog fluid back in it's original bottle (this is were a removable tank on the fog machine really comes in handy) and close the cap tightly. Store in a cool, dry area away from sunlight.

HOW MUCH WILL THE WIND AFFECT THE FOG?
Wind is a fog machines enemy! The particles that make up the fog are very small, 1 to 2 microns in size, and even a light breeze will quickly disperse the fog as it shoots from the fog machine. Sometimes you can move your fog machine to different locations to help redirect the fog to where you want it. Don't try to aim the fog into the wind, its a losing battle.

HOW DO I MAKE THE FOG STAY LOW TO THE GROUND?
Fog ChillerThe fog produced by these machines comes out hot, and therefore rises in the air. One of the easiest ways to cool down the temperature of the fog so that it doesn't rise in the air is to build a Fog Chiller. These are relatively easy and inexpensive to make and make your fog machine much more versatile. For more information on building one, go to our Special Projects - Fog Chillers section.

DO FOG CHILLERS WORK BEST INDOORS OR OUTDOORS?

WHAT ABOUT USING EXTENSION CORDS?
fog machine
If you need to put the fog machine in an area that is away from a electrical outlet, you'll need to attach it to power via an extension cord. First, only use a heavy-gauge extension cord rated for outdoor use. Second, try to use a cord that is no longer than needed. Long cords, particularly light duty ones can lower the amount of electricity (this called impedance) that gets to the fog machine causing it to take longer to re-heat, and possibly not put out as much fog. Always position electrical cords so they won't be tripped over or become a hazard.
