"Can We Play Through?"

Date: 05 Sep 97

Well, last night was my first in Manhattan. Not my very first, but my first on this trip. Turns out that Magnificent Bastard(tm) Jeremiah was free for the night, so we decided to hit the town.

After wandering aimlessly for a bit while Jeremiah tried to figure out where the hell we were and where we were going, we ended up at a little corner bar (that just so happened to be in the middle of the block). Nice place, all in all. I think I had a Killian's while Nips quaffed a Guiness. It is worth noting at this point that we were both drinking pints.

With a slow night unfolding in front of us, we decided to stumble on for a bit. I believe it was around this point where we found another quaint little bar, and this one had cider on tap! Woohoo! After a couple more pints, we headed further down 7th Avenue, venturing into the Village area. I think it was about this point when we decided to play a round of pub golf.

For those of you not understanding, you get a different beer at each of 9 (or even 18) pubs, thus playing a "round". Since we had already downed a couple of pints, we decided to up the ante by playing each hole with a pint rather than anything smaller.

The next couple of hours are a bit of a blur. We walked through a park where a drug dealer asked if we wanted coke whilst the police stood nonchalantly about twenty feet away. Washington Park? I don't recall. It was somewhere near NYU, I think.

I faintly remember another couple of places, one of which was the (supposedly) famous Bar None, where we were served two pints of very flat Red Hook. But the lovely bartender took these back and served up replacements (although I can't remember what the hell they were) when we complained.

Around this time we were on hole #7 or #8, nearing the end of the round (we had decided to only play nine holes since we were using pints). Lo and behold, we stumbled into XXXJoel's old stomping grounds (or so I hear). We stopped at a (supposedly) famous adb bar, that I think was called Bull McCabes. I liked this one 'cause there was this incredible cranberry cider on tap. One of the easiest holes on the course. Must have been a par 3.

After pulling out, we hit the authentic ChinoLatino (note: good stuff!) and proceeded to head somewhat back towards my hotel. Along the way we discovered that we had to pee *really* bad, and we started frantically looking for a place. Finally found some mexican restaurant which seemed to be okay, but they had no pints and we had to finish what we started. So we used the bathroom and left.

I think it was about this time that Jeremiah tried to convince me of his desire to recycle - lovingly giving up much of the aforementioned pints to fertilize the gutter. It was quite a boot. Truly magnificent to behold!

We finally staggered back to 7th Avenue and hit a little irish pub just down from my hotel to complete the round, then decided to call it a night, what with another two weeks starting just next Monday.

Woohoo! What a city...
