If you're using this in a prosumer environment, buy this switch. It's a great choice for a high-end home setup and you won't be sorry. Given the price, it's also an excellent choice for a small office where you aren't concerned about network-wide management (or where you'll only be managing two or three of these). If you're going to use this in a rack in datacenter or for more than a few installations, I'd look at something from one of the Big Three instead.
The good: performance is outstanding. My single biggest concern with any inexpensive switch is how it will handle traffic. Even if the switch says it can handle 30+ gigabits of backplane traffic, I've found that 9 times out of 10, the "cheaper" switches will fall apart once you hit 2 or 3 Gb/s. That's not the case here. I was able to run a few heavy-duty fileservers and multiple application servers across multiple VLANs without any issue. No slowdown, no lockups, just 24x365 reliability. Noise is also a non-issue. While the fan is audible, it's probably quieter than your PC's fans.
The bad: The management interface leaves a lot to be desired. I do most of my management via command line, and while this does have a CLI, it's very limited. You have to unlock additional commands through a little command-line magic, and even then it still has some issues. The web interface leaves a lot to be desired, but is actually somewhat more functional. If you're expecting a Cisco- or Juniper-level environment, you won't find it here. You'll get the basics, and that's about it.
At the end of the day it's a great switch and a massive upgrade over most of the stuff marketed at consumers. But there's a very good reason why this is a fraction of the cost of a comparable Cisco / Juniper / Brocade unit. If you're willing to live with those tradeoffs, then this switch is a very good investment.
