1997 TJ – Ryan Hartwell

Here are a couple of pictures of me going up and down Sunrise lake in
Harrison. My Jeep is a 1997 Tj with the 2.5 l , 32 inch tsl swampers , 1 3/4 BDS spacer kit, Safari snorkel, home built bumpers, roof rack, and rocker guards, electric fan from a Ford 4.7l , K&N air filter, custom dual battery and alternator setup, and a disconnected front sway bar.

This jeep is my daily driver / weekend toy. The best mod I have made is the electric fan conversion I have seemed to gain a little more power.

Also disconnecting the front sway bar is like night and day. Before I would struggle getting up this particular part of the trail and now its a no brain-er.

Jeep YJ – Cam

So the YJ has been torn down for two years now, and is quickly coming to completion. I’ve added some tube (around 150 feet of it), and tubed it from the seats back. It now has Dana 60s front and rear – both 35-spline, LockRight front, welded rear with 4-link. Fox air shocks, leafs up front (SOA), 104” wheel base, and full hydro steering with some nice arms. The drive train right now consists of an AMC 360, to a Ford T-18 (6.32 1st gear) to a Chevy 203 case (with the Ford 6-bolt pattern drilled into it, and Ford internals) then to a www.northwestfab.com doubler, to a Chevy 205 with Ford internals. It has the 32-spline outputs front and rear with 1410 yokes.

I need to do a lot of minor things to this, along with getting some tires (42” IROKs or TSLs), some stock Hummer rims, and some motor parts. Not too bad for being 18!

1997 Jeep TJ 4.0 – Scott Profit

Here is my submission for truck of the month, It’s my ‘97 Jeep TJ 4.0 sport, it still looks pretty stock, but I’ve added a 4-inch Pro Comp lift, 33-inch mud terrains on Eagle Alloy wheels, underneath it has a newly installed short shaft kit, Detroit locker in the rear and 4.10 gearing.

I’m totally kicking my ass for not buying a Rubicon, could have saved some coin, anyhow, these pics are of the local area, we’ve got some kick ass trails up here, tons of camping, and the whole area is mapped and has cellular service (good thing).

Scott Profit

P.S. there are no shiny pictures, as I am sure you’ll agree it looks best dirty!

Suzuki Samurai & 1984 Toyota 4Runner– Steve Kalinocka

Hey Al, it’s Steve Kalinocka. I just got the Internet setup at our new house so I thought I’d send you some pictures of our newest 4x4 rigs.

My Samurai is lifted and with new rubber now. I’d like to get lockers and gears but I think I’ll hold off and get Toy axles first.

My brother and I installed his 6-inch lift on his ‘84 4runner (solid-axle) and added some 36-inch Swampers.

1984 Ford Bronco II – Jamie Lasseter

My name is Jamie Lasseter, I am from Okotoks Alberta. I have been wheeling Bronco II’s for 3 years now and am very happy with the rig in general. It is currently going under the knife to get the rear springs upgraded, but the rest of the truck remains pretty much stock. The rig is a 1984 Ford Bronco II. Stock carbureted 2.8l V6, 5-speed. Dana 28 front diff and 7.5” welded rear with factory 3:73 gears. 2” rear spring blocks and 1.5” front coil spacers. Custom front and rear bush bumpers, safari roof rack, and snorkel. Running 33x12.50x15 Cooper Discoverer S/T tires (studded for that little extra grip) on 15x8 white spoke wheels.

This truck was truly built on a budget and the whole thing was done for under $1500.00 including the $500.00 for the truck.

My favorite mod has to be the welded rear diff. It gets me through all kinds of trouble, and the kids just love the zebra paint job.

Thank you
Jamie Lasseter aka Lilguy Racing

1999 GMC SLE Z71 – Jim Burks

Hey, Here’s my ride, It’ll impress my friends and I every time we hit the bush/pits/trails. Lots of people say how can you take such a good truck through the mud?? I just say, “It makes it through just about every time that’s what makes it a good truck” – they are just jealous!! We go out every weekend and I am usually doing circles around everybody. One time I busted a rear end axle and it took me all the way out of the bush and home with front wheel drive only!! – Thanks GM for rear disk brakes to hold my wheels on when I break axles!!

‘99 GMC SLE Z71 Ext. Cab S.box, ‘01 5.3L V8, K+N filter, 238,000km, 305-70-16 BFG Mud Terrains on not-so-polished Atlas wheels – these are the ticket!!!, 3” body lift, Air bag load assist on rear axle, cranked up torsion bars on front, custom MBRP/Flowmaster exhaust, custom stainless front diff protector.

1991 Jeep XJ – Steven Acker

Hi, I am a member of the New Brunswick Jeep club and we were exploring a new trail, I just happen to be the 4th Jeep back and this mud hole seemed to get deeper with every Jeep. Once I was stuck I wasn’t able to get out because the mud was already coming in slowing around the doors. One young brave sole volunteered to hook the tow strap to the bumper and of course I agreed. The boys wanted to rock the Jeep to get a better photo op but I didn’t have the heart to do it.

Call sign of the NB Jeep club is XJACKER (Steven Acker) 1991 XJ, 4.0L, 3”lift, 31” Bridgestone Duelers, front disconnects, front tie rod end skid, Skid Row gas tank skid, transfer case skid, Nates front bumper, rear Lockright locker.

1976 Land Rover 101 FC GS (Mobile Dental Office) – Sean Stewart

• Vehicle was purchased from Paul Safari Components in Queenston Ont.(near Niagara falls).
• After many hours of borrowing ideas from unimog campers I'd seen on the web, I sat down and came up with the general design. A friend Andrew Breithaupt provided me with a 3-d computer mock-up
• I took the basic design to the local machine shop to get an estimate as I don't weld alumin.
• the camper length is 10'...could not be any longer as the spare tire would interfere with the trailer during tight turns and offroading
• the shell is composed of an aluminium exoskeleton with foam core fibreglass panels bonded in place.
• the alum. frame and stainless steel rollcage/roofracks were fabricated by local machine shop Krueger steel. (pretty expensive!)
• everything metal was either alum or stainless steel...I hate rust!
• there are 5 winches: 16000lb warn front,12000lb warn rear, 2x8000lb superwinch side winches ( in the event of a rollover...never used yet), and 10000lb rear winch on the trailer.
• 4 optima gel batteries
• pintle hitch rotates 180 degrees for towing trailer in extreme off road conditions
• tires (6 of them...2spares) are 1100x16 38" Michelin xl. very hard to find
• engine is original 3.5l v8
• custom soft top (which doesn't leak...rare for a rover) and interior carpeting/soundproofing was done by the local Apple Autoglass guys
• racing seats and harnesses were from (I hate to admit) Canadian Tire...they were cheap and comfy.

1985 Unimog U1300L – Jon

My rig is a stock 1985 Unimog U1300L. It has a 5.7l I-6 diesel, coil sprung 2-link portal axles w/air lockers (19" clearance under the pumpkin), 4w air-assist dual circuit disk brakes, 8 spd air-shift transmission (transmission is mounted approx 2' behind the bellhousing via a shaft for improved weight distribution and ease of service). Tires are michelin XL 14.5R20 (approx 44" diameter). Its also equipped with the "fording" option which pressurizes the entire drivetrain with 2-3psi of air.

Vehicle weight is roughly 10,000lbs, and GVR is 16,500lbs. I've since added a 24v 15,000lb warn winch, a 24-12v 30 amp converter for electronics (GPS, accessory outlets), and a gladhand adaptor w/regulator for running air tools/airing up tires. The only future modification I have planned is a set of XM47 agricultural tires (DOT approved).

Toyota Land Cruiser – Mike Resh

Mike Resh built his Custom 1/2 cab Land Cruiser from Aqualu aluminum body panels. The truck sports a healthy 400 Chevy small block with a custom 4 link suspension using Bilstien coil over shocks at all four corners. This Kelowna snow machine turns 44 inch Boggers with a rear Dana 60 and a front Dana 44. Like most of the snow machines in Kelowna a huge custom gas tank carries lots of fuel to feed the 400 when shredding the snow.

I now have 35x10.5x15 Super Swamper Boggers on it, locked front and rear, a 22re motor with a ported head and upper and lower intake ported as well a Comp Cam and a header, MSD ignition 5.29 gears, custom front and rear bumpers, Marlin Crawler front axles and Birfields.

Next will be one of their high-steer conversions and a custom-made transmission cross member.

Toyota Land Cruiser – Michael

Hi! This is my friend Michel’s Land Cruiser. He has restored it from the frame up. It took him two years and many headaches but it is finally on the road. It has a stock six-cylinder and 41-inch tires on a custom lift. It also has hard and soft tops, a Warn winch and home-made bumpers that are super tough. It goes everywhere!

We live in the Slocan Valley. He is a faithful reader of your magazine, I remember when you guys first started, he was stoked to finally be able to buy a Canadian magazine. Thanks for doing such a great job.

Take care,
Steph

1985 Toyota – Bryan & Alexis

Unfortunately this little power truck (sponsored by McCoolz Performance) isn’t equipped for the rocks but rooster tails fly when it hits the mud. Our somewhat little 1985 Toyota is packed with 40 x 17 Gumbo Mudders, a 350 engine with 300 horse heads, aluminum intake and Holley carb, this truck is made for the mud! Ever since we put the rad, battery and fuel cell in the back it has never worked better.

Seemed like everyone was a little hesitant to get their truck dirty until we ripped through it, that is how we ended up with a special award of first to try everything and tied first for the longest distance through the mud hole (of course we may have incidentally dug the hole a little deeper to make it that much harder for the little guys – oops). I guess it helps that we practice often throughout the summer in our own mud holes behind the farm.

1990 Toyota 4Runner – Jason

Here is another creation from www.toontoys.ca.

Jason’s (AKA Rusty Runner) 1990 4Runner has been a continuing project. The Modifications to date are: Solid Axle Swap using Land Cruiser springs, Dodge coils in the rear, OTT Steering, 4:56 gears, Locked rear, 35” Boggers, bobbed 9”, and a custom soft top.

Next for this project is bumpers and onboard air. Or maybe some rear suspension tweaking.

We’ll see.

1984 Toyota

Hi, here's a couple pics of my '84 Yota. It has a new 22R under the hood, 39.5x13.5 IROKs, 2" wheel spacers, 5:29 gears, locked front and rear, Hooker header and exhaust and custom bumpers. I only used a 4" lift and did some fender trimming so that the truck would have a lower center of gravity. My future plans are to install high steer and a much-needed winch.

Just wanted to say that you guys have a great magazine and I look forward to each new issue. Jeep

Hello 4WD, here are some pictures of my rig. Due to life's priorities, I had to wait until my 40th birthday when my wife finally bought me this first jeep. A Jeep 401 that gets its oomph from a truck avenger carb, which sits on top of Edelbrock intake+cam, and mated to a TH400 now powers it. The transfer case is a solid, dependable BW1339, which runs power to a front D44 with a TruTrac and a rear D44 locked by an Aussie. The gearing is original Jeep 3.54's. I have ProComp shocks all around. I am now running 35" Xterrains, which have been great. I use it as my 2nd car, driven almost daily and off roaded almost weekly.
Keep up the great magazine from a fellow Okanagan wheeler!

1993 Toyota 4.3 Runner

My ride is a 1993 Toyota 4.3 Runner. It started out as an ugly forest green 4 cylinder 5 speed with " girly" stock 215/75r15 A/T's.

A 2" body lift and some bushwacker flares made room for the 33" cooper STT's, and 15x8 black rock crawler wheels it runs now. The 22re was replaced with a tbi 4.3L. Custom front and rear bush bumpers and a splash of silver paint.

This is my daily driver, with over 300 km on it, and can also be found wheelin' with the Calgary Nissan and import off-road club. (cn4xc.com).

See you on the trails
