Growing Up Irish:
I was born Noreen Patricia Elizabeth McLaughlin, a nice, Irish Catholic girl. It looked like it was gonna be straight to the convent, but when I was 15, my brother took me to McSorley's, which had only reluctantly opened its doors to women sometime in the past decade. Woo-hoo! Unisex toilets! ICK! For some reason, the things I remember best about McSorley's were the turkey and onion sandwiches and the same sex bathrooms. I was game for both, and impressed my brother very much. Oh, and I also drank a ton of beer and walked out under my own power, which impressed him even more. Best quote of the night (up around 114th Street), "Man, you drink like a beast!" We were all misty-eyed about Kerouac and shit like that. Then my brother made me call my dad, (thinking I sounded the soberest), to explain why we were about 30 miles and 5 hours off from where we were supposed to be. Dad was not amused. Everybody should get to grow up in an Irish (american) household at least once. We're still working on it...Anyway, I like: (Damn, Jim tried to grab the keyboard again. I told him, "look this is the Academy Awards of Drunkeness and I'm thanking everybody!")
