"Easy way to make wine?"

Date: 04 Oct 96

All this talk of homemade wine/jungle juice reminded me of a particularly nasty evening while I was still studying. Being typically broke students we figured that the best way to spend all available money was to buy over-ripe fruit, yeast and sugar and make our own booze.

We secured a 5 gal cans from the laboratory (previously used to store ethanol), crushed up a mixture of apples, oranges and assorted other fruit, did the whole sugar/yeast/let-stand-for-a-week thing and finally plucked up the courage to decant and drink. First taste was a very close approximation to battery acid but not willing to admit defeat we braved on though and soon were enjoying a healthy buzz.

By the tenth or so glass (counting is one of my first abilities to fail during consumption) something within said 'You gonna pay for this' but I bravely continued until that other ability, namely walking, failed and I came to rest upon the floor where I enjoyed the rest of the evening watching the walls go by.

At this point I should add this that was during the third quarter which was traditionally the time during which faculty sports were played. Sure enough at 7am the next morning I was awoken by a knock on the door imforming me that in 30 minutes I would be required on the volleyball court and had I seen (well lets call him Richard).

Last I remembered was Richard carrying the 5 gal can around informing everyone that he was going to finish it. To cut a long story short, Richard was eventually found, fully clothed, lying face down next to on one side, the can and on the other a very large puddle of semi-digested sundries.

Whether or not we won the game I don't remember but what is still crystal clear in my mind was a timeout in the second game during which Richard demonstrated just how that puddle came into existance.

Cheers
ALAN
