What I did not like is that when I put the battery into the compartment to test the machine before installation, neither detector worked. It turned out one of the included batteries was dead. (By the way, the recommended battery is energizer, but that is not what was included.) After good batteries were inserted, the red lights started blinking. Another minute or so later, the Tests worked on both detectors.
The alarms are nice and loud. It is a relief to know we have this extra protection. And they have not once sounded off accidentally in the several weeks they have been installed, although the alarm near the kitchen sounded off two different times when we were using the oven.
Update: They really work, thank goodness. The kitchen one went off the other day when the toast was burning.
