Mine came with Firmware V.2.271, which I immediately upgraded to V.3.012. There is a big upgrade in quality and easiness with V3.
This device can be flexible on different levels of use, by:
-those who can/want to use only the basic GUI.
-those who can/want to use the Advanced GUI. Mostly for firewall rules.
-those who can/want to SSH into the router. Mostly for C++ coders.
Basic GUI comes with a basic set of Plug-ins, which can be extended while connected to the internet. For my purposes, I only needed one called gl-cloud-ui, which gave me access to the GL.iNet Dynamic Name Service. If it had one (plugin) for DynDNS, I would have used that one instead.
-Modes of operation (renamed by me for clarity, for myself):
-1. Router with NAT, connected upstream to the Internet by Cable (on Ethernet WAN) with DHCP/Static/PPPoE.
-2. Router with NAT, connected upstream to the Internet by USB 3G/4G modem.
-3. Router with NAT, connected upstream to the Internet by USB Tethering, using an Android SmartPhone.
-4. Router with NAT, connected upstream to the Internet by WiFi to an existing (wireless) Access Point (also called Repeater).
-5. Router with NAT, connected upstream to the Internet by Cable (on Ethernet WAN), but no WireGuard (also called Access Point; I don't see any use for it).
-In all these cases above, it can have clients that can connect (behind NAT) on Ethernet LAN.
-In all these cases above, it can have clients that can connect (behind NAT) on Wireless LAN, with the router's own security (Show/Hide SSID; Encryption; Password).
-On Mode 4, the router needs to use the same upstream Access Point Channel/Frequency (it has one radio).
-On Modes 1, 2, 3 and 5, the router can set it's own separate WiFi Channel/Frequency.
-6. Extender (I don't see any use for it).
-7. WDS (I don't see any use for it).
-For those interested in a small bussiness solution, to connect several offices (mesh topology), look elsewhere (hint: Netgear). This one can only do a star topology.
-For those interested in a (star) VPN solution, just connect one router to the internet (so it gets a routing IP) as Server, add gl-cloud-ui and install WireGuard on smartphone (or use a second Mango as Client).
-Good speeds on WiFi, including WireGuard.
Example 1: Laptop-LAN to Mango A (WG client) to Mango B (Server) to Smartphone: 22 Mbps (by iperf).
Example 2: SmartphoneA to SmartphoneB (same Mango): 46 Mbps (by iperf).
Example 3: SmartphoneA (connected by WiFi to Mango A) as WG Client to Mango B, with client Laptop-LAN: 43 Mbps (by iperf).
-First I bought one unit mostly for a future trip, to be used as a wifi repeater. But then I discovered the best thing about this router, which is not even advertised on the Amazon site: WireGuard. OpenVPN works as well, but I did not like the discovery (with Nmap) that the router keeps port 53 open. Then I bought a second unit to be able to do an end-to-end WireGuard VPN. This one also works excellent. There was one bug, but it was solved (by email, next day) by one of their engineers (Kyson). It will most likely be included in the next release.
-In the end I bought another (3rd) unit, which is already online, for accessing my LAN remotely and at the same time as my private/free VPN solution.
-Fast and responsive GUI, I have never seen it crash (6 weeks since the first one). Also I never had to debrick any (of the ones I have) so far. And hope I never need to.
-When I will travel, I will take the 2 units with me: the first one will work in Mode 4 (to connect to a hotel WiFi), and the second one in Mode 1 (to connect my smartphone/laptop wirelessly to this second one only, choosing the least busy channel in that particular place).
Excellent product. I just hate it that compared to Amazon US, the price is double in Canada.
