Its hard to dis this amp, in light of its price.
However!
Running it with some Markaudio Alpair 12P full range drivers, it seems a little vague, in comparison with a vintage Sumo Ulysses, or SAE 2200 amp. Its never harsh, with a Scanspeak ring radiator Revelator tweeter and 15W 8530K 01 woofer, but doesnt quite grip the bass.
On some old Tannoy pro mixing monitor series 600 I use for home theatre, it's stunningly holographic, with just two, but actively relieving it of bass duty below 80 hertz really helps dynamics. So I think this amps strengths are with 8 ohm loads, on non bass heavy speakers.
Voices are strikingly real, phase is preserved wonderfully, but this amp is best in an active system, not doing bass with speakers of typical domestic sensitivity.
With a pair of push pull 98 db/watt 18" drivers on open baffle, the bass is pitch perfect and well controlled.
With a pair of Trace Elliot by Celestion 15 inch woofers in stereo onken cabinets with Altec Lansing 511B horn tweeters, this amp really plays coherently, and louder than a home user could stand (101db/watt!), with fast, powerful bass transients, and clean accurate midrange and treble.
So it's not an amplifier for all audio situations, but in the right usage, it can be outstanding.
I have to stress - This review is NOT taking into account the price of this amp.
It WILL blow the doors off any top of the line receiver's amplifier section, in loudness and sound quality.
It sounds better in my system, with zero hum, when signalled from.my digital preamplifier's XLR outputs.
It's midrange reminds me of my push pull EL84 amp, is better than my 6CA7 amp, not as good as my 300B amp, and more fluid than my Naim amp.
All of which cost far more.
