Hoos" Subject: IJCAI-01 WS on Stochastic Search [ We apologise if you receive this message more than once ] CALL FOR PAPERS / CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The IJCAI-01 Workshop on STOCHASTIC SEARCH ALGORITHMS August 6, 2001, Seattle, USA Workshop Description ===================== Stochastic search algorithms strongly use randomised decisions while searching for solutions to a given problem. They play an increasingly important role for practically solving hard combinatorial problems from various domains of AI and Operations Research, such as satisfiability, constraint satisfaction, planning, scheduling, and many application areas. Over the past few years there has been considerable success in developing stochastic local search algorithms as well as randomised systematic search methods for solving these problems, and to date, for many problem domains, the best known algorithms are based on stochastic search techniques. The increasing relevance and popularity of these methods in AI are reflected by a growing number of publications in journals, such as Artificial Intelligence and the Journal of Automated Reasoning, and at major AI conferences, such as IJCAI, ECAI, and AAAI. This workshop will bring together researchers from different areas of AI and Operations Research in order to discuss various topics in stochastic search techniques. Workshop topics will include: ============================== -- design and implementation of stochastic search algorithms -- metaheuristics, learning techniques, and self-tuning algorithms -- parallelisation and portfolios of stochastic search algorithms -- empirical analysis and evaluation of stochastic search algorithms -- theoretical results on stochastic search algorithms -- stochastic local search vs. randomised systematic search methods -- new applications of stochastic search The organisers aim to create a forum for sharing and discussing the latest results as well as fundamental issues in this highly dynamic and fast growing area of AI research. This one day workshop is organised by Holger H. Hoos and Thomas Stuetzle; it is co-ordinated with the IJCAI-01 Tutorial "Stochastic Search Algorithms" and the IJCAI-01 Workshop "Empirical Methods in Artificial Intelligence" and the IJCAI-01 Tutorial "Stochastic Search Algorithms" (also presented / organised by Holger H. Hoos and Thomas Stuetzle). Format ======= This one-day workshop will start with a brief introduction and overview by the organisers. In 1-2 invited talks, leading experts will discuss general aspects of stochastic search algorithms and their application. In addition, selected workshop participants will be presenting more specific results; these presentations will be selected based on the technical papers and position statements submitted by the participants. Issues raised by these presentations will be discussed by all workshop participants. Furthermore, we are planning to have 1-3 panels (the topics of these panels will be decided based on the submissions) in which panelists first present their position regarding possibly controversial issues in a 10 minute exposition. We will facilitate a workshop atmosphere and promote personal contacts among the workshop participants by various means. At the start of the workshop the participants will introduce themselves and give a short statement on their interest in and experience with stochastic search algorithms. The panels and general discussions will facilitate interaction between participants and the sharing of insights and views. A social programme comprising a joint lunch and dinner will provide further opportunities for an informal exchange of experiences and ideas. This workshop on Empirical Methods in Artificial Intelligence will be coordinated with the IJCAI-01 Workshop on ``Stochastic Search Algorithms'' (organised by Holger H. Hoos and Thomas Stuetzle) and the IJCAI-01 Tutorial on Stochastic Search (held by Holger H. Hoos and Thomas Stuetzle). Important Dates ================ -- Submission deadline: February 28, 2001 -- Notification of acceptance: March 25, 2001 -- Camera-ready copy deadline: April 11, 2001 -- Workshop: August 4, 2001 Submission Procedure ===================== We ask authors to submit technical papers or position papers either in Postscript or PDF. Every participant is expected to submit at least a 1-page statement of interest. Technical papers should address one or more of the workshop topics. Position papers should describe and justify your view on one or more topics relevant to this workshop. The paper should be reasonably concise; technical papers should be in the range from 4 to 6 pages in IJCAI or AAAI conference style, position papers should be about 1000 words. Submissions should be printed on 8.5" x 11" or A4 paper with at least 1 inch margins on all sides. The first page of the position paper should include the title, a brief abstract, and author names, affiliations, postal addresses, electronic mail addresses, and telephone and fax numbers. To submit a paper, email it (or a URL pointer to it) to hoos@cs.ubc.ca and stuetzle@informatik.tu-darmstadt.de. The number of participants is limited to 40 participants; participants will be selected based on the submitted position paper. All participants are expected to contribute to the discussions in the workshop. Note that all workshop participants must register for the main IJCAI-01 conference. Cochairs ========= Holger H. (As with the last few years, GP-2001 is combined with other major strands in evolutionary computation to form the GECCO'2001 conference). While this years reviewers are active perhaps we should consider next years conference, GECCO-2002. In particular who we want (and who we do not want) to be reviewers next time. The details of this will of course be decided by next years organizers however two suggestions to aid them have been made: 1. The chairs of GECCO'2001 Programme Policy Committees (for GP and Evolvable hardware that is me). Should consider the reviews they get back and mark them according to timeliness and apparent usefulness to the authors. 2. The authors should be asked to complete review of reviewer forms when they submit their Camera ready versions. The (1) marks or (2) forms returned by the authors will be passed to the GECCO'2002 organizers before they start to assemble the programme committees for next year. The new possibility of information society requires the development of new more intelligent methods, tools and theories for modelling/engineering of agent-based systems and technologies. This directly involves a need for consideration, understanding and analysis of human factors, e.g. people's knowledge/skill, learning, and performance capabilities/compatibilities in particular software development environments. This is because software developers utilise their experience and represent their mental models via development/engineering of intelligent agent(s). Therefore, the study of interrelated factors such as people's and agent's capabilities constitute an important/critical area in intelligent agent software engineering. This should eventually lead to more robust, intelligent, interactive, learning and adaptive agents. We encourage submitting papers where intelligent agent software engineering is considered as the application of the integration of formal methods and heuristic approaches to ensure support for the evaluation, comparison, analysis, and evolution of agent behaviour. The primary objective of the book is to introduce the readers to the concept of intelligent agent software engineering so that they will be able to develop their own agents and implement concepts in their own environments. Chapters based on research from both academia and industry are encouraged. Representative topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Requirements for intelligent agent software engineering Intelligent agent modelling and management Integration problems in intelligent agent software engineering Intelligent planning/scheduling systems Prioritisation problems in intelligent agent software engineering Engineering models of intelligent agents Modelling, analysis, and management of learning agents Engineering the Information Technology Engineering the learning processes Hybrid neural agents Adaptive agents Learning agents Communicating agents Meta agent architectures Negotiating agents Emerging knowledge based on collaborating software agents Machine learning for intelligent agents Cognitively oriented software agents Biologically motivated agent models Lifelong learning in software agents Robustness and noise in software agents Machine learning for software engineering Evolutionary agents Neuroscience - inspired agents; Agents based on soft and fuzzy computing SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before March 31, 2001, a 2-5 page proposal outlining the mission of the proposed chapter. Papers describing late-breaking developments in the field of genetic and evolutionary computation are being solicited for inclusion in a special paper-bound book to be distributed to all attendees of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation 2001 Conference (GECCO-2001) to be held on July 7 - 11 (Saturday - Wednesday), 2001 at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway, San Francisco, California, USA. This special book is distinct from the conference proceedings. The purpose of late-breaking papers is to provide conference attendees with information about research that was initiated, enhanced, improved, or completed after the original paper submission deadline in January, 2001. We have had an outstanding increase in regular paper submissions in 2001, so the conference schedule will be tight, but we currently plan that late-breaking papers will be presented in special sessions held during GECCO-2001, as they were in 2000, so long as space and time permit (otherwise, poster presentation will be required). The decision about mode of presentation will be announced prior to the May 28 deadline. Note that all papers accepted for publication in the Late Breaking Papers book must actually be presented at GECCO-2001. At least one author of each Late Breaking Paper must register for GECCO-2001, or the paper will not appear in the Late Breaking Papers volume. The preferred procedure is for one or more authors to register before submitting the Late Breaking Peper, or to submit their registration form and payment together with the Late Breaking Paper. If acceptance of the Late Breaking Paper is required before the author may register, then the author will be notified of acceptance or rejection by June 1 (within 3 days of the final submission date, May 28), and will have one week (until June 8) to have AAAI receive the registration form and payment, or the paper will not appear in the special volume. The conference registration form and information will be available at the GECCO-2001 website beginning in March, 2001 (www.isgec.org/GECCO-2001). Late-breaking papers will be briefly examined for relevance and minimum standards of acceptability, but will not be peer reviewed in detail. Authors will individually retain copyright (and all other rights) to their late- breaking papers and should feel free to submit them (either before or after the above deadline) for publication by other conferences or journals. Late-breaking papers must be submitted in camera-ready form in accordance with the camera-ready GECCO-2001 format specifications that can be found here. Late-breaking papers may not be more than EIGHT (8) pages in length. Please send TWO camera-ready copies (printed with very high quality by laser printer) and the SIGNED "permission to publish" form (below) to: GECCO-2001 Late-Breaking Papers American Association for Artificial Intelligence 445 Burgess Drive Menlo Park, CA 94025.USA PHONE: 415-328-3123 E-MAIL: gecco@aaai.org No FAX or E-mail submissions can be accepted. World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics (SCI'2001) will be dedicated to the subject of Agent and Genetic. The Invited Session will be oriented from genetic algorithms to genetic in agents. The modelling of agent and genetic and their integrations in a cognitive architecture is a topic of crucial interest to both Artificial Life and Cognitive Science in general. This special issue aims to foster the integrative and bridge-building work that is often called genetic in agents. It is also time to translate into architectural terms the debate on the interrelations among agents, and genetic aspects of a multi-agents system. Original contributions are sought regarding the development of theory, techniques, and applications of Artificial Life in Agent and Genetic, including the evaluation of programmes. Contributions to theory may include presentation or analysis of the properties of novel AL methodologies potentially useful to solve NP-difficult problems. Papers on techniques should describe the development or the extension of AL methods and their implementation, and discuss the assumptions and limitations of the proposed methods. Application papers should describe the implementation of AL systems to solve significant problems, and should present sufficient information to allow evaluation of the practical benefits of the system. Good quality research papers are sought in this area. In particular, contributions from the following domains are welcomed: * Agent Based Systems: - Advantages (why using these systems than others, .); - Methodologies (local approach, .); - Applications and related works. * Genetic Algorithms: - Advantages (why using evolutionary computation in an emergent system?, .); - Methodologies (global and supervised approach, .); - Related works * Matching Agent and Genetic: - Open problem: self-adaptive system; - Self-generated systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- Schedule: Submission of Extended Abstract (500-1500 words) or Paper Draft (2000-5000 words) March 31, 2001 Notice of acceptance April 15, 2001 Final paper April 30, 2001 Conference July 22 - 25, 2001 EXTENDED ABSTRACTS AND PAPER DRAFTS SUBMISSION FORM Extended abstracts or paper drafts should be sent taking into account the following format: 1. A Workshop at GECCO 2001, San Francisco, 7th July 2001 Peter Cowling and Graham Kendall are organising a workshop at GECCO2001 that will invite researchers to hear from and exchange views with a panel of leading experts in scheduling research, as to how scheduling research should and will develop over the next ten years. The workshop will explore issues such as: new scheduling problems that will arise through advances in information and telecommunications technology, advances in heuristics for complex scheduling problems, the major challenges for scheduling theory, methods for widening the scheduling user community, advanced tools for modelling of scheduling problems etc. WORKSHOP OUTLINE 1) A plenary presentation by Stephen Smith (Director of the Intelligent Coordination and Logistics Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University). 2) A number of shorter semi-plenary presentations by members of the workshop programme committee (given below), which is composed of leading members of the scheduling research community. 3) A discussion of the next ten years of scheduling research, led by a workshop programme committee of leading scheduling researchers. Due to the need to allocate space to this (and other) workshops at GECCO2001 we would like those people who would like to attend this session to preregister by sending an e-mail to Graham Kendall (gxk@cs.nott.ac.uk). More details of the workshop are at the workshop website: http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gxk/gecco2001/ WORKSHOP PROGRAMME COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS: Peter Cowling, University of Nottingham Graham Kendall, University of Nottingham WORKSHOP PROGRAMME COMMITTEE: Edmund Burke, University of Nottingham Ed Coffman, Columbia University Peter Fleming, University of Sheffield Martin Middendorf, University of Karlsruhe David Montana, BBN Corporation Colin Reeves, Coventry University Wolfgang Slany, Technical University of Vienna Stephen Smith, Carnegie Mellon University Gil Syswerda, i2 Technologies Edward Tsang, University of Essex WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION This workshop will allow those attending to discuss how scheduling research can be advanced in the next ten years. There are many techniques that have been reported in the literature that have produced excellent results when applied to scheduling problems, for example the use of meta-heuristic techniques (such as tabu search and simulated annealing) and evolutionary techniques (such as genetic and memetic algorithms). One emerging research area is to develop heuristics that operate at a higher level of generality than current technology can support. This will involve advances in heuristics, meta-heuristics and an emerging technique tentatively called a hyperheuristic. Another interesting idea is to use an "adaptive" heuristic, which modifies its behaviour as the search progresses. Through this workshop we hope to achieve three main aims: allow the delegates to learn about some of the latest techniques and ideas that are being applied by leading researchers in the scheduling community, invite other researchers to present their ideas as to how the field should and will develop in the next ten years (not their current research but new, blue sky ideas that can lead the research in the near future) and promote discussion on these ideas so that the scheduling community as a whole can benefit. -- Dr. Peter Cowling University of Nottingham School of Computer Science and IT Room C78 Jubilee Campus Nottingham NG8 1BB UK tel: (0115) 9514215 fax: (0115) 9514254 email: pic@cs.nott.ac.uk WWW: http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~pic -------------- Sender: Hanh Pham Subject: "AGENTS FOR E-BUSINESS ON THE INTERNET" *Please accept our apologies if you receive more than one copy of this CFP* C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Session on "AGENTS FOR E-BUSINESS ON THE INTERNET" At the 2001 International Conference on Internet Computing (IC-2001) (Submission Deadline: March 5, 2001) for more info: http://www.mcs.newpaltz.edu/~pham/IC/ Monte Carlo Resort, Las Vegas, USA June 25-28, 2001 (in a Multi-Conference even PDPTA + IC + CISST + IC-AI + METMBS + ERSA) (Submission Deadline: March 5, 2001) TOPICS: Agent technology is one of the most promising tools to conduct business via the Internet and Intranets in an autonomous, intelligent, and efficient way.
