It's designed to be highly flexible and easily hacked, but with an eye toward efficiency. ECJ is pretty feature-rich as far as general evolutionary computation systems go. But ECJ was written originally for GP, and as such it sports a very extensive genetic programming kernel. ECJ 6's new features include asynchronous island models, inter-subpopulation exchanges, evolutionary strategies, and fixed and variable-length vector representations for GA/ES.
