Dear ALifers, I'd like to mutate SMILES http://www.daylight.com/dayhtml/smiles/ http://www.daylight.com/dayhtml/doc/theory/theory.toc.html without rendering them invalid too frequently. (I'd like to generate molecular structures from them, then evaluate their fitness). Has anybody given any thoughts as to efficient mutation function for SMILES? (Of course a more direct molecule representation (voxel-inpired) would be far more efficient, but I'd have to write it from scratch). TIA, Eugene Leitl ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 00:30:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Eugene Leitl Subject: Archives of ga-molecule? Dear GAlers, despite extensive websearching I was unable to find archives of the ga-molecule mailing list. Does anybody have a pointer? I'm interested in algorithmic generation of molecular structures with subsequent evaluation for fitness (virtual screening). Its goal is the promotion of the application of computational intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) in the "Euregio" consisting of the German and Dutch regions of De Achterhoek, Emsland, Grafschaft Bentheim, Muensterland, Osnabrueckerland, Twente and Salland. In this context, computational intelligence means the collection of innovative techniques that include neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and evolutionary computing. The Laboratory for Signals and Systems - Network Theory (S&S-NT) is one of the three groups of the University of Twente that contribute to the ECIC. The group has an immediate opening for a "researcher" (MOZ) to carry out practical projects in the field of computational intelligence in cooperation with industries. The projects involved have durations of a few months each and will be directly beneficial to the SME's in the Euregio. The candidate for the opening is expected to have an M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and have affinity with computational intelligence. The employment period is for a maximum of two years. Candiates interested in pursuing a Ph.D. (employment during 4 years) may also react. They will be considered for another job opening in computational intelligence that is still in preparation. For more information, you can contact: - Prof. Dr.-Ing. O.E. Smith" Subject: Ph.D. studentship opportunity Announcing: A Ph.D. Studentship in Agent-Based Systems and Genetics-Based Machine Learning Research Sponsored by British Telecom Research Laboratories and The Intelligent Computing Systems Centre Applications are currently being sought for a Ph.D. Studentship that will become available in September, 1999. The studentship is part of on-going collaborative research between The Intelligent Computing Systems Centre (ICSC) at the University of The West of England, and the Intelligent Business Systems Research (IBSR) Group at British Telecom Research Laboratories. The project involves incorporating genetic mechanisms into software agents so that the multi-agent system enacts a form of decentralised evolutionary computation. The project will employ a Java-based evolutionary agents framework applied to problems relevant to large scale business processes. This examination will employ new technologies being developed at ICSC and BTLabs. The project is being supervised by Dr. Robert E. Smith. The ICSC is a unit within UWE's Faculty of Computer Studies and Mathematics. The mission of the ICSC is to undertake both pure and applied research in collaboration with industry and other research organizations. ICSC also runs a Masters of Science program in Machine Learning and Adaptive Computing. The ICSC's program of research is in evolutionary computing, machine learning, neural networks and distributed computing. It is a management node for the European Network of Excellence in Evolutionary Computing (EvoNet) and is currently involved in a number of European Union and industrial projects in the previously mentioned areas. UWE is situated in Bristol, one of the most livable and cultural cities in the UK. Ideal candidates for this studentship will have backgrounds in computer science, or a related field. Candidate qualifications will be evaluated case-by-case, so please write for further details on this Ph.D. studentship. Please contact Dr. Robert E. Dear All, I thought I had better post this information as a follow up to the recent JASS posting. The two journals are unconnected, though both are relevant to readers of this list and we have been publishing online for 18 months already! ATB, Edmund Chattoe --- The Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation (JASSS) was launched as a new, electronic, journal in January 1998. The journal aims to contribute to the exploration and understanding of social processes by means of computer simulation. It will provide academic and professional researchers with a forum for the exchange of information about this innovative and rapidly growing form of social science research. The journal will be of interest to those working in economics, sociology, anthropology, geography, organisational theory, political science, social policy, business, organisational and social psychology, cognitive psychology and cognitive science, and in areas of computer science including distributed artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems and agent technologies. The field was ripe for the launch of a journal which could act as a central focus for simulation research. The journal will only be available electronically through the World Wide Web (at http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/JASSS/). Because JASSS is published electronically, it is able to provide benefits to authors and readers not usually found in conventional paper journals including: - rapid publication, with no delays for typesetting, printing and mailing - ability to publish full-colour illustrations at no extra cost - opportunities to include multi-media additions to papers, including animations, video clips, sound, data and program sources, etc. - world-wide exposure: the journal is accessible globally through the internet - reduced cost of subscription The journal welcomes papers which apply computational simulation to problems in the social sciences, address current issues concerning theories, tools and techniques for social simulation, and report studies of artificial societies which enhance our understanding of social processes. Submissions to the journal are stringently peer reviewed by an international editorial board reflecting the multi-disciplinary subject areas covered by the journal and the world-wide interest in this rapidly growing field. The journal is published quarterly, with four issues per volume. Original research papers and critical reviews on all aspects of social simulation and agent societies are welcome. Briefer accounts of work in progress and commentaries on papers in previous issues of JASSS are invited for the Forum section. Further details can be found at http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/JASSS/submit.html. Papers, work in progress for the Forum section, and commentaries are all peer reviewed. JASSS does not publish non-refereed articles and requires authors to declare that their submissions have not and will not be published elsewhere. Authors are required to assign copyright on the articles to the journal. Further details of the copyright arrangements can be found at http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/JASSS/copyright.html. The Journal of Artifical Societies and Social Simulation is published by the SimSoc Consortium. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 16:24:38 -0500 (CDT) From: MARC BOUMEDINE Subject: CFP: MICAI2000 Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2000 MICAI-2000 Call for Participation: http://www-cia.mty.itesm.mx/micai2000/ Travel & Local Arrangements: Leticia Rodriguez, Local Arrangement Chair Centro de Inteligencia Artificial, ITESM-Mty Phone (52-8) 328-4377 Fax: (52-8) 328-4189 E-mail: lrodrig@campus.mty.itesm.mx --- Prof. Marc Boumedine Montaner E-mail: mboumedi@campus.ccm.itesm.mx Computer Science Depart.
