There was a system called GARP from the University of Louisville (USA)
which might be of interest to you. Search for "GARP" on these pages:

At one time there was a page called "GARP: A Genetic Algorithm for a
Three-Dimensional Non-Convex Bin Packing Problem" at:

    http://www.spd.louisville.edu/~itikon01/research/rese.html

but that appears to be gone now. You might want to follow up with one
of the authors, Professor William E. Biles:

Subject: EHW Web Page

We have renewed our home page on Evolvable Hardware (EHW):

 http://www.etl.go.jp/~ehw/

In contrast to conventional hardware, in which the structure is
irreversibly fixed in the design process, EHW is designed to adapt,
as the chameleon changes its color to blend in which environment, to
changes in task requirements or in the environment, through its
ability to reconfigure its own hardware structure dynamically
and autonomously.

In this HP, the research activities at Electrotechnical Laboratory
are introduced: EMG(ElectroMyoGraph)-controlled prosthetic hand,
an analog EHW chip for cellular phones, self-reconfigurable neural
network chip, loss-less data compression LSI for electrophotographic
printers, autonomous navigation robot, pattern recognition,
EHW-based clock architecture towards Giga Hertz systems, etc.
In addition, links to activities at major research institutes
are also provided.

I hope you enjoy visiting our site. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact us.

Submission Dead Line Extended to June 15.

                         Call for Papers

                      Discovery Science 1999

The Second International Conference on Discovery Science
          Waseda University International Conference Center,
                           Tokyo, Japan
                        December 6-8, 1999

The second international conference on Discovery Science (DS'99) will
be held at Waseda University International Conference Center, Tokyo,
Japan, from December 6 to 8, 1999. The conference will be sponsored
by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Area "Discovery
Science", in cooperation with Japanese Society for Artificial
Intelligence, and with SIG of Data Mining, Japan Society for Software
Science and Technology. The conference will be colocated with the
Tenth International Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory
(ALT'99).

We are now encountered to a rapidly growing digital network
society. Information available for each person is tremendously
large and therefore is far beyond our capability for analyzing and
understanding. A new generation of computational techniques and tools
is required to support the extraction and the discovery of useful
knowledge from the rapidly growing volumes of data. Raw data is
rarely of direct benefit. Its true value is reflected by our ability
to extract information useful for decision support or for exploration
and understanding of the phenomena exhibited in the data source.

The "Discovery Science" is a three year project from 1998 to 2000 that
aims to (1) develop new methods for knowledge discovery, (2)
install network environments for knowledge discovery, and (3)
establish the Discovery Science as a new area of Computer Science. A
systematic research is planned that ranges over philosophy, logic,
reasoning, computational learning and system developments. We are now
close to the end of the first year and quite a few new research
results are being expected.

The main objective of this conference is to provide an open forum for
intensive discussions and interchange of new information among
researchers working in the new area of Discovery Science. We believe
that such forum will be of benefit to the participants of the
conference as well as to the "Discovery Science" project.

Topics of interest within the scope of this conference include, but
not limited to, the following areas: Logic for/of knowledge discovery,
knowledge discovery by inferences, knowledge discovery by learning
algorithms, knowledge discovery by heuristic search, scientific
discovery, knowledge discovery in databases, data mining, knowledge
discovery in network environments, inductive logic programming,
abductive reasoning, machine learning, constructive programming as
discovery, intelligent network agents, knowledge discovery from
unstructured and multimedia data, statistical methods for knowledge
discovery, data and knowledge visualization, knowledge discovery and
human interaction, and human factors in knowledge discovery.

Subject: GECCO'99: EC Visualization Workshop - Call for participation

A Birds-of-a-feather Workshop at the
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'99)
Orlando, Florida, USA - July 13th, 1999

> Workshop Topic

Evolutionary Computation Visualization

> Workshop Overview

Software visualization is an area of computer science devoted to supporting
people's understanding and effective use of computer software. Within
Evolutionary Computation ("EC") visualization is increasingly being used as
a means for supporting peoples' understanding of their algorithm's
behavior. This workshop offers a timely opportunity for people interested
in the possibilities of visualization to see the current state of the art,
discuss the contribution that this work makes, and influence the future
work done in this area.

> Workshop Presentations

The workshop will consist of five presentations and an open-forum
discussion. Mark Bedau from Reed College, Oregon, will present some of his
work on visualizing the evolutionary activity of alleles. John James
Collins of the University of Limerick, Ireland, will present work on the
visualization of a GA's search behaviour using principal component
analysis. Hartmut Pohlheim will present some of the EC visualizations he
has been using at Daimler Chrysler in Berlin, Germany. William M. Spears
from the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC, will be presenting an
overview of some multidimensional visualization techniques he has been
using. Finally, Annie Wu, also from the Naval Research Laboratory, will
present "VIS," a GA visualization tool that she developed for use on the
Virtual Virus project. After these presentations there will be an
open-forum discussion in which everyone attending the workshop will have
the opportunity to participate.

> Anticipated Audience

As the aim of software visualization is to improve peoples' understanding
and use of computer software, it is hoped that this workshop will be of
interest to anyone exploring the development, application and/or
dissemination of EC.
