GA Digest is now caught up and we would like to welcome and encourage new discussions, comments, and announcements. -- the moderators ------------------------------ From: Ralph Richter Subject: Senior Research Fellowship available Date: Tue, 08 Sep 1998 11:31:39 Senior Research Fellowship at the Plymouth Engineering Design Centre, University of Plymouth, Devon, UK Salary circa 21,000 pounds sterling per annum. A career opportunity exists for a post-doctoral researcher within the Plymouth Engineering Design Centre (PEDC) at the University of Plymouth. The PEDC is a leading research centre investigating the integration of advanced evolutionary and adaptive computing technologies with the engineering design and manufacturing processes. Although the main area of research involves evolutionary and adaptive search, exploration and optimisation other computational intelligence technologies such as fuzzy inference and intelligent agents now play a significant experimental role in developing systems. The post is a senior research career position fully funded, initially, for four years by the University. The successful candidate will be expected to bid for Research Council funding and to establish their own area of research relative to the overall PEDC mission statement and to play a significant role in the further development of the Centre's research activities and management. Much of the research at the Centre is problem-oriented and significant collaboration is maintained with major industrial groups. An ideal candidate would therefore be an engineer with significant experience of adaptive computing technologies and a desire to apply such technologies within complex real-world engineering problem domains. Please contact the Centre Director, Dr. I. C. Parmee for informal discussion and visit the Centre's web site at: http://www.tech.plym.ac.uk/soc/research/edc on behalf of: Dr. I. C. GP has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult problems like automatic design, pattern recognition, robotic control, synthesis of neural networks, symbolic regression, music and picture generation, etc. EuroGP'99 is the biggest event entirely devoted to Genetic Programming to be held in Europe, the second of its kind after EuroGP'98 which took place this year in Paris. The aims are to give European and non-European researchers in the area of genetic programming as well as people from industry an opportunity to present their latest research and discuss current developments and applications. The event will be held at Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden. The workshop is sponsored by EvoNet, the Network of Excellence in Evolutionary Computing, and is one of the activities of EvoGP, the EvoNet working group on Genetic Programming. It will be held in conjunction with five other major European events: * EvoRobot'99, the second European workshop on evolutionary robotics, * EvoIASP'99, the first European workshop on evolutionary image analysis and signal processing, * EuroECTel'99, the first European workshop on evolutionary telecommunications, * EvoStim'99, the first European workshop on evolutionary sheduling and time-tabling, * EvoSCONDI'99, the first European workshop on evolutionary computation for systems, control and drives industry, Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Theoretical developments Experimental results on performance and behaviour of GP runs New algorithms, representations and operators Novel applications of GP to real-life problems Hybrid architectures including GP components Comparisons with other machine learning or program-induction techniques New libraries and implementations The workshop will consist of: A tutorial on GP by John Koza An invited talk Oral and poster sessions with periods for discussion Software demos and industrial stands Fees: Registration fees are still being finalised and will be publicised shortly. Registration to EuroGP'99 will include free non-transferable registration to EvoRobot'99, EvoIASP'99, EuroECTel'99, EvoStim'99 and EvoSCONDI'99 (and vice versa). A reduced registration rate will be available for students. Submissions: To submit, send your manuscript (max length: 10 A4 pages) to one of the co-chairs, Riccardo Poli and Peter Nordin, in PostScript (preferably compressed and uuencoded) BY EMAIL (see addresses below) not later than December 15, 1998. The papers will be peer reviewed by at least two members of the program committee. Authors will be notified via email on the results of the review by January 15, 1999. The authors of accepted papers will have four weeks to improve their paper on the basis of the reviewers' comments and will be asked to send a camera ready version of their manuscripts in LNCS format (12 pages recommended, 15 pages max) by February 15th, 1999. The papers accepted will appear in the workshop proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, which will be available at the workshop. Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers to meet and discuss topics with a selected focus in an informal and interactive setting. Workshops are an excellent forum for participants with common interests to explore new approaches, critique existing approaches, and identify emerging areas of interest in genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC). Members of all segments of the GEC community are encouraged to submit proposals. Individual workshops will be approximately two hours in length. The format of the workshops will be determined by their organizers, who are encouraged to leave ample time for general discussion. Proposals for workshops should not exceed three pages in length and should contain the following information: 1. A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific issues on which the workshop will focus. 2. A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest to the GEC community at this time. 3. The names and full contact information (e-mail and postal addresses, fax, and telephone numbers) of the workshop organizer(s) and brief descriptions of their relevant expertise. 4. A brief description of the proposed workshop format, e.g. paper presentations, invited talks, panels, general discussion, or a combination of the above. 5. A list of potential attendees. Organizers' whose proposals are accepted for GECCO workshops will be responsible for producing a call for participation, selecting participants, gathering abstracts for publication, and coordinating the workshop. Presentation at a workshop will be by invitation of the organizers; attendance and participation at the workshops will be open to all GECCO attendees. The abstracts of the workshop presentations will be published with the late breaking papers at GECCO. Details and additional deadlines will be provided once decisions have been made on the proposals. Workshop proposals should be submitted as soon as possible and must be recieved no later than October 23, 1998. **** Plain text e-mail submissions are preferred. **** Organizers will be notified of the committee's decisions by November 6, 1998. Updated information about the workshop program will be provided at http://www.aic.nrl.navy.mil/~aswu/gecco99 as it is received. Please send proposals and inquiries regarding workshops to: Annie S.
