Subject: Moderator's Note

As always, I'd appreciate any feedback on how GA-List is running.

In particular I'd be interested to know how you feel about including
conference calls for papers (CFPs) and similar items.  Should they be
included only if they *specifically* mention EC, or is that implicit
in the fact that they sent an announcement to this list?  Also, what
is more important to you: receiving all relevant CFPs in their
entirety (even if they're long), or not having to read CFPs that are
excessively long and wordy?

Also, I think I was a bit inconsistent last issue in deleting the
pricing and ordering information from Fred Glover's book announcement
in the last issue (v11n33), since I haven't been removing information
about registration fees from CFPs.  In the future I'll consider
anything that's not a blatant advertisement to be okay -- that means I
won't edit normal CFPs, book announcements, etc., that simply mention
prices.  These seem to me to be more of a service to the EC community
than "advertisements per se".  Let me know what you think.

EA'97 is the third conference on Evolutionary Computation organized in France.
Following EA'94 in Toulouse, and EA'95 in Brest, the Conference will be held

                        KHEPERA CONTEST:

This contest intends to confront various controller systems driving the mobile
robot Khepera and exhibiting adaptive behavior. A Khepera simulator sofware
is provided to the competitors. The live confrontation will occur on both
real robot and simulator during the conference. The first prize will be
a Khepera robot (or an extension module for Khepera, if the winner already
owns a Khepera). All the details are available on the WWW-server:

The EA'97 Conference takes place at the Engineering Institut EERIE.
EERIE is located at Parc Scientifique Georges Besse, 30000 Nimes, France.
EERIE is outside town, 25 minutes walk (there are buses, though).


CONFERENCE VENUE:

1. By train: the railway station is 5 minutes walk from downtown
   and 15 minutes walk from the EERIE.
   There are regular high speed trains (TGV) linking Paris and Nimes
   (3h45 minutes). Coupons (for the French railway) are available upon

   There is a shuttle going to the Bus Station (next to the railway

Evolutionary Robotics (ER) is a new field of research that is concerned with
the use of evolutionary computing techniques for the automatic design of
adaptive robots. The aims of this workshop, which will bring together active
ER researchers and people from industry, are to assess the current
state-of-the-art and to provide opportunities for fostering future
developments and applications.

The workshop is sponsored by the EvoNet, the European Network of Excellence
in Evolutionary Computation, and is one of the activities of EvoRob, EvoNet's
working group on Evolutionary Robotics. It will be held in conjunction with
another workshop organised by EvoGP, EvoNet's working group on Genetic
Programming (April 14-15, 1998).

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Genotype to Phenotype mappings
Analysis of evolutionary processes and of evolved robots
Adaptation to changing environments
Co-evolution of control architectures and body plans
Interactions of evolution, development and learning
Evolvable Hardware in Robotics
Fundamental methodological issues
Simulation-reality transference
Comparison of Evolutionary Robotics methodologies
Scaling to complex behaviors
Fitness formula analysis
Role of Evolutionary Robotics in Cognitive Science
Neuroethological uses of Evolutionary Robotics

Papers are expected to deal with research involving real robots or with
simulation experiments that explicitly deal with issues of relevance to real
robots.

Submission Instructions

Electronic submissions via ftp are strongly encouraged (see our web page for
full submission instructions). For submissions in traditional paper format,
send two hard-copies to each of the Program chairs, Philip Husbands and
Jean-Arcady Meyer. All submissions must arrive no later than 1 December 1997.
Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent by email on 10 January
1998 at the latest. Camera ready versions of the papers will be required by 31
January 1998.


Paper format: LNCS format, 12 pages recommended, 15 pages maximum. Accepted
papers will be published by Springer Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer
Science series and made available at the conference's site.



Demonstrations

Computer, video, and robotic demonstrations are also invited for submission.
Contact the Program Chair and indicate equipment requirements.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Eleventh International FLAIRS conference seeks high quality paper
submissions in all areas of AI, including planning, learning, uncertainty
reasoning, computer vision, expert systems, multiagent systems, logic,
knowledge representation, and AI education. All accepted papers will appear
in the conference proceedings, and selected authors will be invited to
submit a full paper to a special issue of the International Journal of
Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence.

SUBMISSIONS

Authors must submit 6 copies of an extended abstract of 1200 to 1600 words.
The extended abstract should not identify the author(s) in any manner.
Please include one separate cover page containing the author name(s),
address, phone number, affiliation, paper title, and topic area. In cases of
multiple authors all correspondence will be sent to the first author unless
otherwise requested.

Abstracts must be received by October 20, 1997.

Abstracts received after this date will not be considered. Notification of
acceptance will be mailed by December 15, 1996. Authors of accepted papers
will be expected to submit the final camera-ready copy of their full papers
by February 23, 1998. Final papers will consist of at most 5 galley pages
(approximately 10 double spaced pages).

Genetic programming addresses the problem of automatic programming,
namely the problem of how to enable a computer to do useful things
without instructing it, step by step, on how to do it. The rapid growth
of the field of genetic programming reflects the growing recognition
that, after half a century of research in the fields of artificial
intelligence, machine learning, adaptive systems, automated logic, expert
systems, and neural networks, we may finally have a way to achieve
automatic programming.  Genetic programming is fundamentally different
from other approaches in terms of (i) its representation (namely,
programs), (ii) the role of knowledge (none), (iii) the role of logic
(none), and (iv) its mechanism (gleaned from nature) for getting to a
solution within the space of possible solutions.



FROM THE FIRST SECTION OF THE BOOK

Automated programming will be one of the most important areas of
computer science research over the next twenty years.   Hardware
speed and capability has leapt forward exponentially.  Yet software
consistently lags years behind the capabilities of the hardware.  The
gap appears to be ever increasing.  Demand for computer code
keeps growing but the process of writing code is still mired in the
modern day equivalent of the medieval ``guild'' days.  Like swords in
the 15th century, muskets before the early 19th century and books
before the printing press, each piece of computer code is, today,
handmade by a craftsman for a particular purpose.

The history of computer programming is a history of attempts to move
away from the ``craftsman'' approach -- structured programming, object
oriented programming, object libraries, rapid prototyping. But each of
these advances leaves the code that does the real work firmly in the
hands of a craftsman, the programmer. The ability to enable computers
to learn to program themselves is of the utmost importance in freeing
the computer industry and the computer user from code that is obsolete
before it is released.
