Specific techniques include but are not limited to evolution strategies, evolutionary programming, genetic algorithms, and associated methods of genetic programming and classifier systems. Papers emphasizing mathematical results should ideally seek to put these results in the context of algorithm design, however purely theoretical papers will be considered. Other papers in the areas of cultural algorithms, artificial life, molecular computing, evolvable hardware, and the use of simulated evolution to gain a better understanding of naturally evolved systems are also encouraged. Papers must conform to IEEE standard submission guidelines which are available in IEEE transactions (for example, see the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks or the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems). Those wanting to receive an author's information booklet from the IEEE can request this at trans@ep.ieee.org. Six (6) hard copies of the manuscript should be sent to: David B. Fogel Editor-in-Chief IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation c/o Natural Selection, Inc. 3333 N. Torrey Pines Ct., Suite 200 La Jolla, CA 92037 The editor-in-chief will be pleased to comment on the suitability of other submissions at the request of the authors. Further questions can be directed to dfogel@natural-selection.com (an email address of d.fogel@ieee.org is anticipated and will be announced shortly). Associate Editors L. Altenberg, R.W. Research at the Centre involves the development of strategies for the successful integration of adaptive search techniques such as the Genetic Algorithm, Evolution strategy, Ant Colony models, Simulated Annealing and complementary soft computing techniques with each stage of the Engineering Design process. The Centre takes a problem-oriented approach supported by substantial collaboration with UK industry. The following positions are currently available within the Centre: Research Fellow The Centre currently requires a Research Fellow (RF) for an initial short-term contract (circa seven months) to investigate existing adaptive search strategies for the successful manipulation of mixed integer problems describing engineering system configuration and involving variable system control parameters. This work will support current collaborative research with a leading UK power generator but will focus in the main upon generic engineering aspects related to efficient search across similar design/control hierarchies. Although initially a short-term position there will be opportunities for extension. The successful applicant should have a strong engineering and/or computing background preferably with experience of thermal/hydraulic systems and with experience of the various adaptive search algorithms. Closing Date: 20th August, 1996 Salary: stlg16,018.00 - stlg18,196.00 ====================== Research Assistant The Centre currently requires a Research Assistant (RA) to undertake research concerning the establishment of appropriate adaptive structures that will allow satisfactory co-evolution of preliminary design models describing initial engineering system configuration. This is likely to involve the utilisation of a number of adaptive and more deterministic search and optimisation techniques operating co-operatively within a singleframework. The research will support a larger project with a leading UK aerospace company but will concentrate more upon generic aspects applicable across the spectrum of engineering design. In this respect the researcher will be expected to work with a number of current industrial collaborators. The research will be supported by a network of SUN Ultra workstations and the successful applicant will have a strong engineering/computing background. Experience with the various adaptive search algorithms would be considered advantageous. This post is of three years duration and the applicant will be expected to register for a higher degree. Salary: stlg11,649.00 - stlg13,100.00 Closing Date: 31st August, 1996 ================== Research Student The Centre currently has an opportunity for a Research Studentship to investigate the integration of manufacturing criteria with an adaptive preliminary design search process. The research will involve extensive investigation of both preliminary design practice and manufacturing requirement in addition to the adaptive search algorithms and complementary soft computing technology. The project will be supported by a leading UK aerospace group and the student will also be expected to liase with associated companies to explore generic issues. The research will be supported by a network of SUN Ultra workstations and the successful applicant will have a strong engineering/computing background. Experience with the various adaptive search algorithms would be considered advantageous. This EPSRC project studentship is of three years duration and the applicant will be expected to register for a higher degree. Closing Date: 31st August, 1996 Further details of the PEDC can be found on: http://www.tech.plym.ac.uk/soc/research/edc/ All posts: Please send CVs in the first instance to Dr. I. C. Parmee, Plymouth Engineering Design Centre, University of Plymouth, Drakes Circus, Plymouth PL4 8AA, Devon, UK; or electronically to: iparmee@ plymouth.ac.uk Many Thanks, Ian Parmee ------------------------------ End of Genetic Algorithms Digest ******************************
